How to Differentiate Between Screws and Bolts

We see screws and bolts in everything around us, whether it is a laptop or a mobile phone or your scooter. Basically, these two tools are indispensable in attaching and securing two parts together so that a complete structure can be formed.

However, while a layman will find it immensely difficult to differentiate between a screw and a bolt, the scenario is completely different for a mechanical engineer who has to handle instruments like screws, bolts, thread gauges, Depth Gages For Sale and Od Micrometers on a daily basis.
Thus, here are some easy ways to differentiate between the two. Watch out!
  • Differences in functionality
There are noteworthy functional differences between a bolt and a screw. Thus, the basic function of a bolt is to get inserted into the hole of an assembly part and then fasten it with another one.  Normally, bolt fastens two assembly parts when it is tightened with the help of a range.
A screw, on the other hand, is an externally threaded fastener. The chief function of the screw is manifold. It can be inserted into the hole of an assembly part, or it can be tightened to mate with a preformed internal thread.

  • Differences in aesthetics
There are distinctive aesthetic differences between a bolt and a screw.  While the bolt features uniform cross section, the screw comes with non-uniform cross section.  Again, while bolts always come with nuts fitted to them, screws do not need nuts. Rather, screws can be used all alone for fastening two assembly parts conveniently.
Moreover, while the shrunk of a bolt is usually tapered in shape, a screw comes both tapered and pointed shapes.
  • Differences in thread design
Bolts and screws also vary in their thread design too.   While the thread of a bolt is always spiral in structure, a screw has threads that are of helical structure.
  • Differences in fastening capacity
When the quality of fastening by bolts and screws are taken into account, bolt always scores over screw.  The assembly parts that are joined together by bolt have immense strength and can only be opened with wrenches and spanners. But the comparatively loosely fastened parts in case of a screw can be conveniently unfastened with the help of a screw driver.
